Slow Going

Barely at 5 Miles

"A lot more snow than we're used to."

That was the word from John, our Road Foreman, on the conditions of the Road. It's buried. Just buried. Have I mentioned the more than 200 inches of snow that fell in Pinkham Notch this winter?

They've made their way up to the 5 mile post, but that's it. There is so much snow, progress is a few hundred feet per day. And from having been up there myself, that's impressive.

That being said, all the culverts below the 5 mile post are now open and cleared. Clearing the culverts is key because it ensures that the snowmelt runs below the Road and not over it.

The crew will keep plugging away, and I'll get you more updates as we have them. Keep your fingers crossed for more great weather.

I was fortunate to be part of Ryan's trip up the mountain on Friday. It was beautiful and breath taking at the same time. The guys on Road Crew who are working up there trying to clear the Road are literally on the side of the mountain bulldozing and moving snow over the very steep sides. It would be slow going under normal conditions and with the winter we had in Pinkham Notch, over 200", it is very slow. If anyone is wondering why we are not yet open take a look at Ryan's video to see why.
