The beautiful beginning of the foliage season

This weekend seems to be marking the beginning of a really colorful foliage season in the Pinkham Notch - Greens Grant area.  With the several hard frosts of the past week we've seen a steady increase in what some of us are calling the most colorful season in years.  This mornings undercast (9.27.08) just set it off perfectly.

Undercasts are quite unpredictable, they may last all day, they may rise up and obscure everything, or they may morph into separate cloud formations.

Really quite spectacular today!

The color is still coming on here in the Notch - hope to see you soon!

Looking froward to driving up the mountain, we going to be down there in two weeks, I hope there is some color left in the trees!

You'll have a great drive! There will be good color somewhere in the Mt Washington area even if we're past peak right here at the Auto Road. But you never know, we may have one of those prolonged seasons where the color lasts for weeks right here. See you soon.

Is the snack bar still open at the summit?

The Sherman Adams State Park building withg the snack bar and gift shop as well as the Mt Washington Observatory museum will remain open until Oct 18. But always weather permitting - if we can't open the Road to the summit, generally these operations won't be operating at all or at a much reduced capacity.

We'll be driving the auto road around Oct 13-14 -- do you think there will still be lots of color?

Dale - probably by the 13th - 14 th the color here at the Auto Road will have started to drop off, still colorful but past peak. But there will still be great color in the Notch on the way up and of course the views of the color in the valleys will still be excellent!
