Meister Burger
I have a question for all you racers and Meisters out there. Especially the married ones. As you may or may not know, I have recently been married. I am feeling like the weight of my ring, or some other marital phenomenon is slowing me down out there on the course. My wife tells me it's the fact that I am 30 now and that my metabolism is changing. I used to be fast. I used to finish in the top three. I can't take this type of disappointment week after week. I am a very competitive person. Somebody help.
So here is my question...Can I blame my poor results on the band around my finger? Or could it be the lack of serious training mixed with the scary fact that Nate is getting older?
I used to be able to just wax the skis and go. Somebody help.

Nate, it's your first year of marriage and your first year in your thirties. Relax a bit; lighten up; enjoy your honeymoon. You are NOT old; you are in your prime man. Now get out there and train with those high school and college kids. You can be in the top three I just know it !!

"...some other marital phenomenon ... " H-M-M-M, I don't think we should go there in this discussion, Nate. Let's just think about the wisdom, humility, and acceptance that comes with aging gracefully. Of course if you are serious about slowing down the diminishing performance returns, you might think about doing a little (or a lot of)extra training.

Nate
The fastest guy out there is 49. The fastest woman is 47. So it can't be strictly age related.... Those two might actually train a little though.
Must be the wax
BTW one of the high school kids training yesterday did a timed run on the course at the end of his work-out-17 flat.

It's not the ring! You might actually have to work at it rather than "just wax the skis and go" Welcome to what many of us (from the start) have had to learn.

Nate, I think you are jumping to the conclusion that you are getting slower a little prematurely! I felt really good about how I skied yesterday--I skied technically better I'm sure than in week one, and you beat me. :) It may be that some of the skiers who are finishing higher than you in the rankings are getting faster, rather than you getting slower. They may be doing some specific things that are leading to this improvement--technique improvements, learning more about their own abilities and how to properly pace, waxing, training more specifically for success in 5 km races, etc. Don't lose hope! And by all means, don't blame marriage! After all, being married brings great happiness. I personally ski better when I'm happy than when I'm not. Good luck, and let joyful emotions carry you on wings around the meister course.

Nate, you're doing just fine, don't worry about changing a thing!

Wow, you guys are all over me on this one. Well, I guess I generated some conversation if nothing else. I did ski last night after work and this morning before work.
I think I will do a little better this week. It just really hurts being beaten by folks that I normally can catch.
Or maybe the real answer to my old success is that I paid Carl off in cookies to doctor my time. You will never know!

Hey Nate, marriage is worth it!!! I think you are spending too much energy worrying about being 30 and not enough skiing. By the way, I really like macadamia white chocolate chip cookies if you race in the afternoon.

Nate, I am sorry but I think it is lack of training AND being 30. 'Cause I'm not married and I have slowed down too!
