November

I really don't like November.

It's official: November is my least favorite month. Except for Thanksgiving, November doesn't really have much to offer. Two major factors contribute to my dislike of this month: 1.) the end of daylight savings time and 2.) it's not winter yet. OK, so maybe neither of those factors are November's fault, but I need a scapegoat.
The loss of daylight savings time really bums me out. In general, I like to get a workout in at the end of the day, but when it's dark at 4:15...not so much. That means I have to motivate in the morning, and sometimes that's not easy. Plus, it feels like the day is gone before it even starts. Add one of those gray, drizzly days November is famous for and the feeling doubles.
So, I guess I got a little too excited last week with the snowfall. I do it to myself every year. I see snow. I convince myself it's going to stay. And, before I know it, I spend all of November lamenting the fact that it's not winter yet. I'm ready to ski. And, November is not cooperating.
Well, I guess I'll just have to continue to wage my personal battle with November...at least it doesn't have 31 days.

Pay no attention to that guy...he's new. Here's my take on November: It's a wonderful month, full of the promise of a new season to come but with the reality of a slower pace after the usually busy summer months. It's the time to regroup, recharge and get ready for the next season's sports offerings. It's the time to get away for a short break since we're between seasons, a time when the leaves are off the trees and the views from the ridges are even more spectacular. Ever been to Acadia NP in the "off season"? No crowds, amazing scenery and great lodging deals - what's not to like? Sure the days are shorter, that's what running trails with a headlamp is all about - it's wonderful, and a whole different feeling. Now's the time to get in those last intense workouts before Nordic Meisters, so drag yourself out of bed and keep running. You'll thank me on January 4th. Howie

Hey! No complaining allowed :-) You work in a gorgeous spot, where you get to see the Presidentials in all seasons, in all weather conditions. How cool is that? We're all jealous :-) Of course it's even more wonderful when it's nice and bright and sunny out, but there's something to be said for gray days too. It gives you the chance to enjoy the flecks of red on the winterberries in the swamp areas and the the blue jay as it flits through the landscape. So, put on your raingear and enjoy! ~Sparkplug
