Newton's Revenge conditions

(More blog entries from howie)

Sunday morning 4:45 am

This mornings weather is a welcome change from Saturday when we had to postpone the race.  Today the temperature is 45 F and the winds are from the NW at 35 to 41 mph - not too bad.  If those weather stats were the whole story we would be able to hold the race without further question.  However light rain started yesterday afternoon and has been intermitant throughout the evening.  Light rain often causes the gravel sections to get muddy and slippery, conditions that caused us to have to close to the public early yesterday.

We are currently checking the Auto Road gravel sections and will most likely wait until the last possible moment to make the decision on whether the race can be held or not.  Conditions need to be safe not only for the bike racers but also for the volunteers, and support vehicles which need to travel to the summit.

At 5:30 the conditions remain the same as above. The gravel sections of the Road are currently a problem with the surface being very soft and not conducive to either racing a road bike through it or driving conventional vehicle through it. This can change for the better quite quickly and we are hoping to see a let up in the rain in the next hour or so. We are operating as if the race will go off on schedule and will make the call much closer to race time - 7:30 am
