Early Season Operating Notes

The Auto Road is now open to the summit of Mt. Washington.

Operating Hours:
Daily: 8:00am - 5:00pm
(Weather permitting)

The Auto Road will offer Guided Tours, and you are welcome to to drive your own vehicle. Due to sand and gravel on the pavement, motorcycles will not be allowed to travel on the Auto Road until weather allows the pavement to be swept clean.

Here's a recap of our opening process on Saturday, May 24, the first day we reached the summit:

5/24/08 12:40 pm update: We are now open for all vehicles to the summit (except motorcycles).  At this time of the year we operate hour to hour depending on current weather and Road conditons.  We expect to operate normally now through 5 pm.

5/24/08 10:45 am update: Guided Tours now open to the summit!  We continue to work on the road surface to open for private cars later today - weather permitting.

5/24/08 9:21 am update:  Auto Road open to private cars to treeline, guided tours to the 6 mile mark.  We continue to work on the snow and rime ice on the upper two miles with the continued expectation of a mid day opening to the summit - as always, weather permitting!   -Howie
