The Bittersweetness of Spring Skiing
Spring's attire.
Spring skiing is variable, it's soft in places and crusty in others. It's dirty snow. It's linking patches of snow by skiing over thin strips of ice and grass and even dirt. It's jumping over open waterbars. It's conditions we would never accept any other time, but we love it when it's here. The sun is shinning, the air is warm and smells earthy. Your attire changes completely, you can ski in t-shirts and tights or you can end up looking a little ridiculous with most of your layers tied around your waist, side zip of your pants up to the knee, hat shoved in a pocket but your gloves on in case those variable conditions send you face first unto the abrasive ground.
It also is a sign that winter is ending and it will be 8-9 months before we can put the skis back on. As those last patches of snow melt, we drag out the boats, dust off the bikes and dig the running shoes out of the back of the closet, summer is coming.
