The Catch 22 of Early Season Snow

(More blog entries from ryan)

Snow is mostly good.

It's snowing lightly here in Pinkham Notch right now. And that's mostly a good thing.

Here's the Catch 22 of early season snow:

Early season snow is great because it's always great to see those first few flakes of the season. But that's just what they are: a few flakes. It's not enough snow to really pile up, and most likely any snow that accumulates will melt as soon as the sun hits it tomorrow. Now, if it's snowing it means that it's cold. But it also means that it's humid. Humidity is the enemy of snowmaking. We need cold, dry air to make snow. Or really cold and humid. Well, it's still early so it's not quite that cold yet. So it's snowing, but the fact that it's snowing means that the conditions are such that we can't make snow. Hence, the Catch 22 of early season snow.
