Finally...
...on the summit.
After dealing with yet more new snow and rime ice on the upper portions of the Road this morning, we are now open to the summit.
Like I said yesterday, it's been a crazy spring on Mt. Washington, and now we're ready to move into summer. Forecast is calling for a beauty tomorrow!

We are SO excited - I've been checking your blog for updates this past week. We made plans to bring the family up - my husband and I hiked up to the summit a few times, our last hike was just to Tuckerman's to watch the skiers 13 years ago - our oldest just turned 12 today, now we'll be back to introduce the raw beauty of the mountain to our 3 kids - THANK YOU for all your hard work and dedication - it is TRULY appreciated!!!

Besides an icy road, what type of conditions would force you to close the road to the summit? I'm driving out from Indiana and plan to visit Mt. Washington on June 11. I hope I can drive to the top.

Dee — Glad to hear you're returning to the mountains!
Toby — Generally, once we're open, ice and snow would be the main reasons we would close the Road. Sometimes wind is also a factor. Each day, we make weather assessments as the day goes on to ensure the safety of everyone on the Road.

A great big THANK YOU to the Auto Road staff and crew. Your efforts in the face of extraordinay challenges quite literally made possible a marvelous day on the East Snowfields and the Ball Crag Snowfield.
Happy skiers and riders from the Time For Tuckerman, New England Telemark and Telemark Tips communities truly enjoyed the fruits of your labors. Our 2008 Memorial Day weekend BBQ and Slackfest was a great success.
Hooray for the Auto Road
Thanks!

Rob — Glad you had such a great time. I saw some pics over at Alpine Zone. Looked like a blast. I hope you offered burgers to the Road Crew!

Are motorcycles able to ride to the Summit yet?

Denis - Not yet. We need to clear loose sand from the Road, but we've had to sand the Road the past couple days in order to get it open. Once we no longer need to worry about icing each day, we'll be able to open to motorcycles.

Wondering about County Days and the alpine flowers in bloom adjacent to Auto Road! Any information would be greatly appreciated as my husband and I prepare for our annual trips up
The Mountain!

Alice - We have not had the County Days promotion for at least two years due to lack of interest on the part of the public. However you may want to take advantage of our $2.99 a gallon gas specials we'll be running on weekends in June, a deal that will save you far more money than the county days promotions did. See the special link on ourfront page. The Alpine Flowers are coming on with diapensia, lapland rosebay and mtn azalea all visible at the road sides today. Hope to see you up here again!

Hi Howie!
Thanks for the alert about gas and now we realize it's just for June. Drats, did we miss the Mountain Avens by side of road? Or if they're in bloom, where
abouts are they, please! We need to add them to our study list. Thanks and appreciate the blog ease and personal replies.

Hi Alice - the Mtn Avens typically comes out a little later. We see them at the top of the five mile grade on the right but not yet. I'll try to get up there tomorrow ans get some shots to post in a new blog entry.
