Cold and soggy = screeching halt

Last week was a blessing: the prefect weather to work on the Road. Those warm, dry days were just what we needed. Then they ended. Right now and for a chunk of the rest of the week, the forecast is calling for rain and cooler temps. Not condusive to working above treeline.

Right now, we're at a tricky stage. We need to work on the wash outs on the gravel sections of the Road. Unfortunately, most of them still have ice and snow in them. Those need to be clear, so we can fill them in. Filling them in when the ice is still in there is not a good idea. Well, that's what John tells me anyway, and he assured me from experience. So, we wait.

Also, the culverts up high are mostly clear. The larger ones still have ice in them. If we push more water through them in the name of clearing them, we may actually do the opposite. If it gets cold, they would refreeze at night. Then any melting that would occur during the day or if any rain fell, that new water would flow over the Road. Not a good scenario. So, we wait.

That being said, we're still trying for the summit for this weekend, but we're not optimistic. If the forecast is wrong, we may be able to pull it off. That being said, lots of folks have been enjoying the ride to treeline. It's a pretty cool thing to do at this time of year. So keep checking back, and we'll keep you in the know.

My family drove to the treeline on Mother's Day and it was worth the trip. We'll be back later for the summit trip, but we were not disappointed with the spectacular views at the 4500' level on Sunday.
